Redundancy Has to Travel With the Crew, Not Just the Rack
A meticulously redundant system falls apart the moment it depends on one person who happens to be on a different floor when something goes wrong. The strongest production teams treat redundancy as a staffing question as much as an equipment one: every critical path has a named backup operator, not just a backup device, and that operator knows the failover procedure well enough to execute it without a walkie-talkie conversation first. Cross-training junior technicians on primary systems — not just backup ones — means the person closest to a failure is usually already capable of fixing it.
Document It Once, Then Rehearse It
A redundancy plan that lives only in a senior technician's head disappears the moment that technician is unavailable — which is exactly the situation redundancy exists to protect against. Written failover procedures, laminated at the FOH position and the video village, turn a stressful improvisation into a checklist. The value isn't in the paperwork; it's in the fact that a plan gets rehearsed once it's written down, and a plan that's been rehearsed executes in seconds instead of minutes when it actually matters.
The Best Redundancy Is Invisible
Clients rarely notice good redundancy planning, and that's the point. The show that recovers from a failed wireless pack without a visible stutter, or that keeps streaming through a dropped encoder without the audience knowing anything happened, is the show that gets a production company invited back. Reliability, more than any single piece of gear, is what separates the vendors clients call once from the ones they call for every event afterward — and it's built well before the trucks ever arrive on site.
